Instagram DM automation limits: what Meta allows, and what tools choose
Meta lets an Instagram professional account send one private reply per comment, within 7 days of the comment, and up to 750 private replies an hour to comments on posts and reels. More messages need the person to reply first. Any other cap — 100 an hour, 1,000 a month — is a tool's own choice, not Meta's.

Updated 1 October 2026
Every comment-to-DM tool runs on the same Meta API, so every one of them lives inside the same rules. The confusion comes from tools printing their own plan limits next to Meta's, and blog posts repeating both as though they were the same thing. This page keeps them apart.
What does Meta actually document?
| Rule | What Meta says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Which accounts | An Instagram professional account — creator or business. Every limit below is per professional account | Messaging API |
| Private replies per comment | One message to the person who commented | Private replies |
| When a private reply can be sent | Within 7 days of the comment. For Instagram Live, only while the broadcast is on | Private replies |
| Private replies to post and reel comments | 750 calls an hour per professional account | Rate limits |
| Private replies to Live comments | 100 calls a second per professional account | Rate limits |
| Messages with text, links, reactions or stickers | 100 calls a second per professional account; 10 a second for audio or video | Rate limits |
| After the private reply | Follow-ups only if the person responds, and within 24 hours of their response | Private replies |
| Replying to a DM someone sent you | Within 24 hours of their message | Messaging API |
| Human Agent tag | Lets a person — not an automation — reply manually within 7 days | Send messages |
Two of those do most of the work. One reply per comment means a tool gets one chance to deliver your link, so whatever it sends has to be the link or a button that leads to it. Seven days means a comment that waits too long can never be answered at all.
What do tools choose for themselves?
Everything else. A tool can send fewer than Meta allows — to keep a plan affordable, or to stop one viral post spending an account's whole hour — and it can count in units Meta does not use, such as DMs a month or contacts a month. These are each tool's own published limits, read off their pricing pages on 1 October 2026:
| Tool | What it limits | Its own published number |
|---|---|---|
| Pullsy Store, Store plan | DMs an hour, per Instagram account | 100 an hour; comments past it are queued, not dropped |
| LinkDM | DMs a month | 1,000 on Free; 25,000 on Pro |
| InstantDM | DMs an hour | 750 an hour on Legend Pro |
| ManyChat | Active contacts a month | 25 on Free; 250 on Essential; 2,500 on Pro |
Figures such as "200 DMs an hour" circulate in blog posts and videos as Instagram's limit. We could not find them anywhere in Meta's documentation, so treat them as unverified. The documented number for private replies to posts and reels is the 750 an hour above.
Why Pullsy Store sends 100 an hour and queues the rest
A storefront's Store plan includes 100 private replies an hour for each connected Instagram account — our number, well inside Meta's 750, sized for a creator answering their own comments. When a post brings in more matching comments than that, nothing is thrown away:
- Comments past the hour's allowance wait in a queue, oldest first, and go out as the rolling hour frees up room.
- The queue stops half a day before Meta's seven days run out, so a reply is never attempted on a window that has already closed — that would spend the one reply Meta allows on nothing.
- One DM per person per rule, seven days by default, so the same person commenting ten times takes one place in the queue, not ten.
- An optional cap per rule. Past it, commenters get a public reply asking them to DM you the keyword instead, which opens the 24-hour window from their side.
The arithmetic, so it is not a surprise: 100 an hour is 2,400 a day, or about 15,600 across the six and a half days the queue works in. A post that pulls in more matching comments than that in its first week will have some go unanswered, on any tool sending at that rate.
Worth asking before you move 🤔
How many automated DMs can an Instagram account send per hour?
Meta's rate-limit documentation allows 750 private replies an hour per Instagram professional account for comments on posts and reels. Tools often send fewer by choice: Pullsy Store's Store plan sends up to 100 an hour per account and queues the rest.
How long after a comment can a tool send the DM?
Up to 7 days after the comment, according to Meta's private replies documentation. For Instagram Live comments the reply has to go while the broadcast is still on. After that the comment can no longer be answered privately.
Can an automation send more than one message to a commenter?
Only if the person responds. Meta allows one private reply per comment; if the commenter replies or taps a button in it, the account can continue the conversation within 24 hours of that response.
Is 200 DMs an hour Instagram's limit?
Not in Meta's documentation as of 1 October 2026. The documented figure for private replies to post and reel comments is 750 an hour per professional account. Numbers like 200 an hour are repeated widely but we could not trace them to Meta.
Do I need a business account for Instagram DM automation?
You need a professional account, which can be either a creator account or a business account. Meta's messaging APIs work only with professional accounts, so a personal Instagram account cannot use any comment-to-DM tool.
What happens to comments over Pullsy Store's 100-an-hour limit?
They are queued, not dropped, and sent oldest first as the hour frees up — as long as the comment is still inside Meta's 7-day window. The queue stops half a day early so the one reply Meta allows is never wasted.
